From the first day Airman Ronald L. Darr saw a demonstration of a Bell medivac helicopter used in the Korean war, he knew he wanted to fly helicopters. Becoming a Dustoff pilot for the U.S. Army in Vietnam in an unarmed, UH-1 Huey, putting his life on the line every day, flying into one hot combat zone after another to save countless lives. But the memories of and bitterness stemming from the Vietnam War and ill treatment of veterans by both the Government and civilians took a heavy toll on his mind, body, and spirit.

Our tours and Operational Areas over lapped. We were located @ Long Binh, about 30 Knicks NE of Siagon. There were three (3) operational Air Ambulance Detachments: the 57th with call signs ranging from 70 to 79 (I was Dustoff 78), the 283rd, call signs in the 30's -I was later Dustoff 30 when I switched with Lt. Chimannello who wanted to stay at LBJ; his sister was a Nurse at the 91st Evac hospital also co-located...,(he was killed several months later flying in bad weather near Nui Ba Dinh with a co-pilot I'd recommended be FEB'd and stripped of his wings; he would panic under pressure, and pressure was a given flying Dustoff (Aero-medical evacuations). Then there was a 4th Head Quarters Detachment made up from the other three to act as a central Command authority and centralized records keeping and repository section. I'd need to go back into his book for his Detachment ID, but I believe it was the 254th, with Call-signs from 100 to 109. there were some pilots who never made Aircraft Commander, because of a lack of flying skills and decision making under heavy stress. I recall Darr's shoot down, especially because we shared a common Officers Club. Ron you brought back a lot of memories. I hope in someway we can get together.... I do regret not being able to buy a hard copy. A medic wrote about myself and two other AC's in 2011; it was just one of several missions where I went through at least 3 (three) aircraft to complete a mission. His book is on Amazon: "The End Of The Road," by 1SG Charles T. Bagley. I remembered him as a Medic stationed at Dak To. I extended, spending 20 months flying Dustoff, and regret to this day that I didn't extend again. In all I spent 20 months as Dustoff, then went back as a Mohawk OV-1 Instructor, and mission pilot mostly flying over SE Laos -it was classified as secret and ant memories of such flights, often through heavy flax were figments of our imaginations....Product details

As a vietnam veteran I found it opened some doors that have been closed for a long time.
So far this has been my favorite book about the helicopter role in RVN. Dustoff and Scouts were the most dangerous helicopter missions flown during the war. This really gave a good representation of what took place during the missions and how perilous they were. Well written also.
I really enjoyed the bluntness of Darr telling his story and his recovery. Unknown to me when I chose this book, my father was a Staff Sergeant on the ground with the 9th fighting when Darr was shot down. My dad was one of the lucky ones that survived thanks to helicopter pilots like Mr. Darr. Thank you Mr Farr for sharing your story.
Super book about a small fraternity of heroes.
This book is a little hard to read but covers the subject of Vietnam era medi-vac pilots very well. I knew this pilot from a later time - when he flew Cobra Gunships for C Troop 3/17 Cav. I was his crew chief for a while. Somewhere around here I have a lot of photos of Mr. Darr and others from Charlie Horse.

I was in the Army in the 1990's and there were still a few Vietnam Vets on active duty in my unit we had great respect for them.
Blazing Skies
A well written biography of a man tormented by the Vietnam war and how he was able to come to grips with his PTSD.
I chose this book because a childhood friend was one of the men CWO Darr was able to save as a Dust Off pilot. I never realized how close to dying he came. I don't generally read a lot of books about Vietnam, but glad I read this one. Recommended for anyone interested in becoming a military helicopter pilot.
